RESEARCH INFORMATION SHEET

Determinants of Affect and Approval

You are asked to participate in a research study conducted by Daniel M.T. Fessler, Ph.D., Associate Professor, from the Anthropology Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. You are a possible participant in this study if you are at least 18 years of age. For scientific reasons, this information sheet does not include complete information about the study hypotheses and the research questions being tested.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study is to explore how individuals differ in their affective and evaluative reactions to other’s behavior.

PROCEDURES
If you volunteer to participate in this study, we will ask you to indicate how disgusting you think certain behaviors are. We will also ask you to indicate how much you approve or disapprove of certain behaviors. We will then lead you to a second questionnaire about yourself. We will ask for your age, gender, income, education, political preferences, religious and sexual orientation and residence. For women, this will also include questions about reproductive status, menstrual cycle and hormone replacement therapy.
Participation in the study will take a total of about 20 minutes.

POTENTIAL RISKS AND DISCOMFORTS
No potential risks are anticipated. If you however feel discomfort in answering certain questions, you are free to skip these questions without consequences of any kind.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS
Although you will not benefit from your participation in this survey, those interested in this research will be able to refer back to the author’s web site at http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/anthro/faculty/fessler/ and see the final results. In addition to the benefits of conducting basic research, society may benefit from a fuller understanding of how individual differences influence moral judgments.

PAYMENT FOR PARTICIPATION
You will not be paid for your participation in this research study.

CONFIDENTIALITY
This study is entirely anonymous - no identifying information will be collected about you in the main study. At the end of the study, we will ask you if you want to be informed about subsequent surveys. If you agree, you will be led to an additional survey where you may enter your email address. This information is collected and stored separately from your answers in the main study; at no point can we link your answers from the main study to your email address, if you provide one.

PARTICIPATION AND WITHDRAWAL
This study is entirely voluntary. If you volunteer to be in this study, you may end your participation at any time without consequences of any kind. You may also refuse to answer any questions you do not want to answer and still remain in the study. The investigator may withdraw you from this research if circumstances arise which warrant doing so.
